Because the iPod shuffle is different from the regular iPod, the iPod touch, the iPod nano, and the iPhone, connecting it and loading it are different too. This section discusses both the second-generation and third-generation iPod shuffle models, as Apple is selling both at this writing.

Connect the iPod shuffle

To connect a third-generation iPod shuffle, connect its cable to a high-power USB port on your computer, and then slide the other end of the cable into the iPod shuffle’s headphone socket. To connect a second-generation iPod shuffle, connect its dock to a high-power USB port on your computer, and then impale the iPod shuffle’s headphone socket on the connector in the dock. The iPod shuffle is formatted with the FAT32 file system for use with both PCs and Macs, so the iPod Software doesn’t need to reformat it the first time you connect it to a PC.

Load the iPod shuffle

Because the iPod shuffle doesn’t have enough capacity to hold any but the most modest library, iTunes includes a feature called Autofill for loading the iPod shuffle. Autofill lets you tell iTunes to fill the iPod shuffle to capacity with songs from either your library or a specified playlist. You can also load an iPod shuffle manually if you prefer.

Configure the iPod shuffle

Before you load the iPod shuffle for the first time, check that it is correctly configured:

  • 1.     Click the iPod shuffle’s entry in the Source list to display its screens. Click the Settings tab if it isn’t already displayed (see Figure 2-13).
  • 2.     Select the Open iTunes When This iPod Is Attached check box if you want your computer to automatically launch or activate iTunes when you connect the iPod. This is usually handy.
  • 3.     Select the Sync Only Checked Songs check box if you want to prevent iTunes from putting on the iPod any song whose check box you’ve cleared. This setting is usually helpful; it’s not available if you select the Manually Manage Music check box.
  • 4.     Select the Enable Sound Check check box if you want to use the Sound Check feature to “normalize” the volume on the iPod. This helps prevent wide variations in the volume of songs, but it tends to make them sound less interesting because it squashes down the dynamic range—the difference in volume between the quietest bits and the loudest bits.

    5.     Select the Convert Higher Bit Rate Songs To 128 Kbps AAC check box if you want to get as many songs as possible on the iPod shuffle. Converting songs to 128 Kbps prevents higher-bitrate songs from sneaking onto the iPod shuffle and hogging its limited space. For a second-generation iPod shuffle, there’s another benefit: This setting enables you to load songs in formats that the iPod shuffle doesn’t support (for example, Apple Lossless Encoding). The drawbacks are that the conversion slows down the loading process a bit and reduces sound quality somewhat.

  • 6.     If you want to load the iPod shuffle manually, select the Manually Manage Music check box, and then click the OK button in the confirmation message box that iTunes displays.

  • 7.     If you want to be able to store data on the iPod shuffle as well as songs, select the Enable Disk Use check box. iTunes displays a message box warning you that you will need to eject the iPod manually. Click the OK button to dismiss the message box. (The Enable Disk Use check box is automatically selected and unavailable when you’ve selected the Manually Manage Music check box.)
  • 8.     If you want to be able to use the third-generation iPod shuffle’s VoiceOver feature for hearing song and artist names and switching playlists, select the Enable VoiceOver check box and choose your language in the Language pop-up menu
  • 9.     If you want to prevent the iPod from playing louder than a certain volume, select the Limit Maximum Volume check box, and drag the slider to set the maximum volume.
  • 10.  Click the Apply button to apply the changes.
