T-Mobile and MetroPCS are being tied to rumors this week that suggest the two carriers will merge to create a larger, fourth place wireless provider. T-Mobile currently serves around 33 million users while MetroPCS adds about 10 million to the pot. In other words, the combined 42+ million subscribers would still trail Sprint’s 56 million loyalists.
There’s a way to go before this sort of deal is ironed out and totally wrapped, what with MetroPCS using a CDMA technology and T-Mobile’s GSM network. Of course that’s obviously not a deal-breaker and even Bloomberg reports that Deutsche Telekom’s supervisory board is scheduled to meet tomorrow to approve a deal. It is suggested that the deal may revolve around a share swap and that an announcement could come in the same day as approval.
