HP has entered the convertible tablet-cum-notebook arena with the HP Envy x2. With Windows 8 on board, it seems that everyone is eager to get a piece of the “hybrid PC” pie.

It was announced at IFA 2012 in Berlin, and we caught up with HP at Showstoppers, to have a look at its offering. Having seen rival devices from the likes of Asus and Samsung, does HP have a chance with the HP Envy x2?

At first glance it’s a very definite yes. The HP Envy x2 is beautifully crafted and really feels like a premium notebook. In feel the Envy x2 is very much like the baby MacBook Air, and there’s a passing resemblance to Apple’s machine too.

Of course, it’s entirely different. Slide the catch in front of the hinge and the screen separates from the keyboard, giving you an 11.6-inch tablet to walk away with. The tablet weighs 680g, a little on the heavy side, and combined the package is 1.4kg.

Sitting under the hood is a next-generation Intel Atom processor. There’s 64GB of storage and a microSD card slot on the tablet itself. The display offered good viewing angles from our examination on the show floor: the 1366 x 768 IPS display offers 400nits of brightness too.?

Both the keyboard and the tablet contain batteries and the keyboard adds a range of conventional connectivity options, so you have HDMI, USB and SD card slot.

In addition the touchpad offers pinch zooming and, in our quick play, was nice and slick in operation. The keys offered great travel, resulting in an easy typing action. It’s a little too soon to judge performance, but we’ll be sure to take a closer look in a full review when we get the chance.

The docking connection seems solid, held in place with magnets and secured with that catch. It’s secure enough to port about the place without wobble or the worry of the two halves becoming separated.

The docking hinge also drops down, to raise the rear of the Envy x2 when opened, putting a good angle on the keyboard for typing.

It’s an impressive start to life for HP Envy x2. It looks and feel like a quality hybrid PC, so if you think you’re going to be after a Transformer-style device, it’ll be well worth consideration when it hits the stores later in the year.

UPDATE?Pocket-lint now has UK pricing and availability details. The HP Envy x2 will be available from late October for ?799.
