Android powers 4 out of 5 smartphones around globe

We Android fans take pride when we say that “Android is king of all the mobile OS” and now another report is out which tells us that Android is conquering the world of smartphones as out of 4 out of 5 smartphones are powered by Android. International Data Corp (IDC) reported that around 211.6 million Android smartphones were shipped in the third quarter this year, grabbing a market share of whopping 81%, that’s a huge increase of 51% year-on-year.

idc_smartphone_os_q3_2013Apple dropped to 12.2 from 14.4%, Windows Phone saw an increase thanks to the Nokia Lumia series, and then there is Blackberry, which dropped from 4.1 to 1.7%. It seems that within few years, the Blackberry phones might go extinct, as a lot of old BB users are either Android or iPhone, though mostly are switching to Android.

“Android and Windows Phone continued to make significant strides in the third quarter. Despite their differences in market share, they both have one important factor behind their success: price. Both platforms have a selection of devices available at prices low enough to be affordable to the mass market, and it is the mass market that is driving the entire market forward.”

The way people are converting to Android, and a lot of manufacturers are launching Android powered phones, it seems by the end of next year, we might see the market share crossing 90 percent.

Thoughts?
