Huawei hedging bets against Android

Share

Chinese hardware maker Huawei has confirmed that is it is exploring its own mobile operating system as a backup in the event it must walk away from Android.   Just as ZTE is doing with Mozilla’s Firefox OS, Huawei is planning on ways to augment its Android portfolio with other platforms.  In some cases this may mean Window Phone 8, in others it may be an internal OS.

“Whatever consumers like, we’ll develop.  We’re also devoting resources into coming up with a phone operating system based on our current platform in case other companies won’t let us use their system one day.” – Huawei’s  CEO, Wan Biao, to Reuters

It’s nearly impossible to imagine Google not “letting” Huawei use its Android platform as it’s open source and freely adaptable.  On the other hand, this could just be Huawei’s way of hinting at a forked version of Android, or something altogether different.
